There is no perfect way to get educated to prepare you for your work encounters, no matter how great of a college you went to. Aside from the actual work that you do, you will be surrounded by a variety of personalities, prejudices, and people who have their own agendas. You will need to know how to adapt since no matter what company you work for this will be true. Another thing you will have to learn is each company’s culture.

Accept Differences

Let’s say, your boss would yell if someone didn’t pick up the phone at your first job. At your next job, you heard the phone ringing at someone’s desk so you answered it. Your new coworker yells at you for answering their phone. Sometimes you just can’t win, because the rules at one workplace don’t always apply equally across the board.

At the first company, the management believed that there was no excuse to let a phone go to voice mail. There were different views at your second job. Every company you work will take time to learn the details. Approach each new job with an open mind and ask questions to accomplish this. Hopefully you will meet some friendly souls who will take the time to show you the ropes.

Company Culture

Company culture encompasses your interactions with customers, co-workers and even the way you dress. If you have been out of the job place for awhile, it may be difficult to know what to wear to work. The dress code may be outlined in an employee handbook if it’s a larger company. Your should observe your colleagues to see how they dress, it’s one of the best ways to determine what’s acceptable. You should also pay attention to their mannerisms. You may be able to use your cell phone during the day if you notice everyone else using theirs. But if this is not common, a good practice is to turn it off, or at least switch to vibrate when you enter the building, and keep it tucked in your briefcase or bag.

It is amazing that anyone can be successful at a new job , since they are faced with so many new things to learn when beginning at a new business. Asking questions, with an open mind and an effort to play by the culture rules will help you fit in at a new office. Keeping an open mind means not making assumptions about the company or the people. Give yourself time to fit in. It is better to float in softly like a butterfly, than to knock down walls like a bulldozer.
